The tremendous advancements in biology over the past half century- from Watson and Crick’s elucidation of the structure of DNA to today’s astonishing, rapid progress in the field of synthetic biology- the design, engineering, construction and production of synthetic cell factories, has positioned us for a new round of innovation and industrialization of biology. Current developments in biological sciences have created a niche for “Bioeconomy” through research and innovation in biological sciences complemented by physical, chemical, engineering and information technologies to create economic activity and public benefit.

 The Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics has been ranked 1st among all private universities and institutions in India. In 2013, the Association of Biotech Lead Enterprises (ABLE) has honoured us as one of the best private biotech and bioinformatics education institutions in the country for doing outstanding research and education due to its strong R&D program, up-to-date educational curricula, modern laboratory infrastructure, highly qualified faculty, IPR & patents, and placements of graduates. Department also ranked in top 10 private Universities/ Institutes of India by BioTecNika magazine(2019).

Curriculum designed with a broad knowledge base
The Department imparts education to equip students with modern skills compatible to the needs of industry, academia, government and non-government organizations. Keeping in view the inter- and trans-disciplinary nature of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, the curricula have been designed with broad knowledge base, encompassing courses from fundamental sciences (Biology, Mathematics, Physics), Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, in addition to core courses in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Project-based learning is an integral part of all curricular programmes.
Research
The Department is actively involved in research by having the distinction of running externally funded R & D projects worth Rs. 25 crores from various Govt. of India agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology, DRDO, Ministry of Environment and Forest, ICMR, and industries. The Department has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for research in biosynthetic pathway discovery and genetic improvement of indigenous medicinal herbs by the DBT, Govt. of India.The Department is recognized as technical agency to implement GOBARDHAN project by Govt. of Himanchal Pradesh and Jharkhand (2018). Following are our major research thrusts:
Medical Biotechnology
  • Infectious diseases- diagnostics and anti-microbial resistance;
  • Human genomics, genetic predisposition, stem cells, diabetic-induced neuropathy, peptidomimetics and phytopharmaceuticals as drugs
Food Technology
  • Selection and formulation of probiotics;
  • Nutraceuticals and functional foods in nutrition and health;
  • Food processing and analytical technologies
Industrial Biotechnology
  • Biofuels (algal & cellulosic feedstocks);
  • Bioremediation of e-waste, solid municipal waste, etc.;
  • Industrial enzymes: bioprospecting, genome mining and protein engineering;
  • Optimization, up-scaling and life-cycle analysis of bioprocesses
Plant Biotechnology
  • High value phytochemicals- pathway discovery and metabolic engineering;
  • Genetic improvement of indigenous medicinal herbs
  • Plant cell cultures for rapid multiplication and production of phytochemicals
Bioinformatics
  • Computational genomics, big biological data mining and clinical informatics;
  • Designing and implementation of prediction algorithms, BI pipelines, tools, and databases, etc.

The placement of graduates has been more than 95% during the last years with most of the students offered jobs in more than one industry. PSO-1:Graduates will demonstrate thorough knowledge and technical competence to provide novel solutions in biology.

Engineering Graduates will be able to:
  • 1. Engineering knowledge:Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • 2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • 3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
