Civil Engineering

The Department prepares students for the award of a B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering. The curriculum has been specially designed keeping in view emerging Civil Engineering needs of the country as well as the modern emphasis on IT enabled Civil Engineering.
At P.G. Level, the department offers 2-year M.Tech programmes in Construction Management, Environmental Engineering and in Structural Engineering. In addition, a Ph.D. degree is offered in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Hydropower Enginneering, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources.



To strive for excellence, knowledge creation and research contribution to the field of Civil Engineering, and to serve the society and the nation with missionary zeal, thus to be recognized internationally as one of the best centres of research and education in all the areas of Civil Engineering.
  • M1: To provide a vibrant educational environment to the students in the competitive field of Civil Engineering keeping in view the emerging infrastructural needs of the country as well as the emphasis on IT-enabled Civil Engineering profession.
  • M2: To keep pace with the advances in Civil Engineering techniques and technologies to provide training and skills for creative, innovative and ethical attitude without losing academic focus.
  • M3: To provide state-of-the-art skills and knowledge in multi-disciplinary and multi-domain operations to the undergraduate and graduate students; so they may emerge as leaders in the world of Civil Engineering and highly sought after professionals to serve the nation and the society .
B Tech CE – Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)
We focus on the following objectives to realize our vision and missions.
PEO-1: Engineering Principles : To utilize appropriate theoretical and modelling concepts in dealing with real-life civil engineering problems and developing their solutions. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates having senior position in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-2: Administrative Skills : To have the integrity, requisite technical and communication skills to achieve the desired objective working within the group helping in realizing their potential ideas. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates being acting as project leader in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-3: Adaptability : To develop skills leading to potential for excellence in other professions beyond the regular realm of CE and performing successfully. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates working outside the professional realm of CE in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-4: Continuous Professional Development : To advocate the principles of self learning inculcated life-long to be professionally active to benefit the society. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates enrolling for higher education degrees (MTech/MS/PhD) within the realms of CE in 3 to 5 years time
PEO-5: Multifariousness : To promote within the student the manner and ability to gain and effectively utilize integrative knowledge through a variety of different activities including industrial and research training to develop engineering solutions serving the society effectively. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates working on modelling and detailed design aspects of large scale CE infrastructural projects in 3 to 5 years time
PEO-6: Projects : To conceptualize, promote, develop, lead and complete large scale project deliverables within the required timeframe successfully. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates working would have led to successful completion of at least one such project in 3 to 5 years time
PEO-7: Ethics and Attitudes : o inculcate amongst the students issues of social relevance and adaptability to other international cultures while working in such cross-country interdisciplinary group and thereby working within the bounds of professional ethos and ethics. The evaluation criteria will involve 5% of the graduates being exposed to working in such international environment in 3 to 5 years time.
Graduate Attributes/Program Outcomes(POs)
Attainment of Program Outcomes PO-1 through PO-12 as given below will be assessed by direct assessment through Course Outcomes (COs).
PO-1. Engineering knowledge : Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and engg. specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO-2. Problem analysis : Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze engineering problems to arrive at substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural, and engineering sciences.
PO-3. Design/development of solutions : Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components, processes to meet the specifications with consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
PO-4. Conduct investigations of complex problems : Use research-based knowledge including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
PO-5. Modern tool usage : Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
PO-6. The engineer and society : Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
PO-7. Environment and sustainability : Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO-8. Ethics : Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
PO-9. Individual and team work : Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
PO-10. Communication : Communicate effectively with the engineering community and with society at large. Be able to comprehend and write effective reports documentation. Make effective presentations and give and receive clear instructions.
PO-11. Project management and finance : Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team. Manage projects in multidisciplinary environments.
PO-12. Life-long learning : Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
Programme Specific Objectives (PSO)
PSO -1/4/6 will be evaluated over the project work conducted by the students before the award of the final B.E Civil Engineering Degree.
PSO-2/3/5 will be evaluated over the different core, advanced and elective courses studied by the student over the eight semesters before the award of the final B.E Civil Engineering Degree.
PSO-1 : Emerge as competent technical professionals, using their skills in planning, design, construction and operation of the built environment, utilizing their skills to analyze and design systems, and managing technical activities involved in civil engineering projects.
PSO-2 : Develop such professional skills as required to become productive from the very beginning in employment or in higher studies.
PSO-3 : Understand their ethical, environmental as well as professional responsibilities so that they appreciate the impact that their engineering solutions can have on the sustainability, society and the nation as a whole.
PSO-4 : Acquire the analytical ability to create, analyze, formulate, and solve different problems in the field of Civil Engineering; and to identify and develop the necessary and suitable tools for the same.
PSO-5 : Be prepared for lifelong learning for becoming successful civil engineers and develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach and ability to relate engineering issues to broader social and human context, in which their engineering contributions will be utilized.
PSO-6 : Be able to work effectively in collaboration with other members of multi-domain professional teams and exhibit strong leadership quality, communication and interpersonal skills as prime movers in the profession.

The Department carries out research and development in the following fields of Civil Engineering:
  • Rockfill material modelling, Constitutive modeling, FEM in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil plasticity.
  • Slope stability problems (including seismic), Soil-nailing, Landfill design.
  • Fluvial hydraulics, Scouring, Flow of water around hydraulic structures such as bridge piers and abutments.
  • Concrete rheology, Development of HPC with Alcofine, micro-silica, etc., Composite materials, Prestressed concrete.
  • Dynamic analysis of structures subjected to extreme loading, and earthquakes, Seismic evaluation of existing buildings.
  • Active and passive control of tall structures against earthquakes, Smart structures.
  • Air pollution, Estimation of NOx / CO concentrations, and Solid-waste management.
  • Pavement Materials, Design and Maintenance, Optimization Techniques.
  • Development of mini-standard penetration test.
