Prof. Raj K Bhatnagar
University of Cincinnati, USA.

Title: Exploiting parallelism of hadoop/spark kind of systems for data analytics algorithms.
Abstract: Large amounts of data are being collected in every domain of our society.  Science and engineering research can be accelerated and businesses can become more efficient if we can infer interesting concepts embedded in these large data sets. These data sets are too large to either fit in the main memory of a single machine or to be speedily transferred from one machine to the other Parallel algorithms are needed for analysis of these large data sets that engage multiple machines and work with the size and mobility constraints of the data. In this talk we present some current challenges in developing massively parallel analytics algorithms in the context of the Hadoop-MapReduce-Spark paradigms of parallel computation. We outline some parallel algorithms for various types of clustering algorithms, and also describe some challenging clustering related problems and also their applications in science and engineering domains. We also describe some parallel versions of graph mining algorithms, show applications that can benefit from them, and describe algorithm design challenges that still exist. The third type of algorithms we discuss are for characterizing and analyzing high velocity streaming data, some applications for such algorithms, and the current challenges being faced. We close our presentation with some cautionary thoughts on how much trust can be placed in models that are derived completely form data and also on what can be done for their stronger validation.

Biography: Prof. Raj K Bhatnagar is Chairperson of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computing Systems at University of Cincinnati, USA. He has earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science in Dec. 1989 and Master of Science in Computer Science in Dec. 1985 from University of Maryland, College Park, Md-20740. He has completed his Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering in July 1979 from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India. His area of research includes Scalable Parallel High Performance Architectures for Mining from Large Scale Data Processing and Intelligent Data Analysis

Title: Challenges and Opportunities in Heterogeneous High Performance Computing Systems
Abstract: Rapid advances in processor architecture have enabled accelerators such as Graphics Processing Units, Many Integrated Cores, and specialized accelerators, along with multi core processors as major players in increasing the performance of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. While the performance potentials of these architectures are high, they also pose significant challenges in extracting performance, while ensuring portability and productivity. In this talk the landscape of current HPC systems and how the multi core and many core architectures have influenced their design will be described. The challenges posed by these architectures in programming these systems will also be discussed. Next, research contributions of our group in developing compiler and runtime systems for synergistic program execution on heterogeneous accelerator-based architectures will be presented.

Biography: Prof. R Govindarajan is associated with Supercomputer Education and Research Center (SERC) and Department of Computer Science and Automation ,Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore 560 012, INDIA. His current area of research includes Scalable Context-Sensitive Points-to and Comprehensive Path-sensitive Data-flow Compiler Analysis, High Performance Computing using General Purpose Accelerator Architecture and Efficient Cache Architecture and Memory System Performance and Design for Multocores. Prof. R Govindarajan is associate editor of several journals including ACM Transactions on Architecture and Code Optimization (TACO), Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Parallel Computing (ACM ToPC), IEEE Micro, and Computer Architecture Letters etc.

Title: Applications of Distributed Computing for the Next Generation of On-line Education: Real World Use Cases
Abstract: Modern on-line educational environments enable and scale the involvement of an increasing large number of single/group participants who can geographically be distributed, and who need to transparently share a huge variety of both software and hardware distributed learning resources. For instance, the Virtual Campus of the Open University of Catalonia (www.uoc.edu), which is the first virtual university in Spain, started 20 years ago fully online and currently supports more than 54,000 online students and 3,500 teachers and administrative staff, receiving more than 2.2 million users from over 90 countries. Therefore, the next generations of online learning systems are to overcome important non-functional requirements arisen in distributed environments, such as scalability, flexibility, availability, interoperability, and integration of different, heterogeneous, and legacy online learning systems.
This talk will present the issues and results of leveraging powerful distributed technologies to improve and enhance the demanding key educational processes found in current online learning. In particular, a number of use cases will be reported and discussed of the successful use of Cluster, Grid, P2P and related technologies, such as Hadoop, MapReduce and JXTA, in the real learning context of the Open University of Catalonia. Use cases range from the efficient processing of large amounts of event log data for real-time e-assessment, effective user modeling and trustworthiness-based security to supporting efficient peer group management in the context of online collaborative learning. These use cases include methodological and technological insights in correspondence with the potential impact of distributed computing to support the next generation of online learning systems.

Biography: Prof. SANTI CABALLE is associated with the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) as well as an Accredited Full Professor by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya), Spain. He is also an Academic Director of the Postgraduate Program in the area of Software Engineering at the UOC. He is affiliated with the Department of IT, Multimedia and Telecommunication (IMT) of the UOC, where he teaches on-line courses in the area of Software Engineering and conducts research activity on ICT Education (e-Learning), Collaborative Learning, Software Engineering, and Distributed Computing. Dr. Caballé holds Ph.D. (2008), Master's (2005) and Bachelor's (2003) degrees in Computing Engineering from the UOC. His teaching activity started in 2004 as an Assistant Professor at the IMT Department of the UOC, where he became Associate Professor in 2006 and Academic Director of the Postgraduate program of Software Engineering in 2010. He received a teaching accreditation as Tenure-track Lecturer issued by AQU Catalunya (2008) and was awarded with teaching merits ("quinquennis") for the period 2005-2009 under the Docentia program by UOC (2010).  Dr. Caballé was formerly a Research Assistant (2003-2005) at the IN3 research center of the UOC where he became Associate Researcher in 2006, and in 2009 he also became Associate Researcher at the eLearn Center of the UOC. He has been a Pre-doctorate researcher at the International Computer Science Institute (2007-2008, Berkeley, CA, USA) and a Post-doctorate researcher at the Fukuoka Institute of Technology (2013-2014, Fukuoka, Japan). He was awarded with research accreditations as Full Professor (2015) and Tenured Assistant Professor (2012) as well as with research merits ("sexennis") for the period 2004-2009 (2010) by AQU Catalunya. He is currently the Head of the Research Group SMARTLEARN affiliated with the IMT Dept of the UOC .


Prof. R.K. Ghosh

Biography: Prof. R.K. Ghosh is associated with Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He has earned doctorate degree from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 in the area of Distributed Systems. His area of research includes Distributed Systems & Sensor Networks, Parallel Algorithms, Parallel Processing, and Genetic Algorithms.

 

 


Prof. Manoj Misra

Title: Web Phishing detection schemes
Abstract: Phishing came as a serious threat in 1996 when phishers stole user name and passwords of AOL users. Since then many solutions have been proposed to detect and prevent Phishing but as per the APWG report, total number of unique phishing sites observed in the second quarter of 2016 was 466,065. This was 61% higher than the previous quarterly record in Q4, 2015. The talk will mainly focus on phishing detection schemes and will summarize the research issues in this area.

Biography: Born on September 24th, 1961 at Kanpur (UP, India), Dr. Misra received his B.Tech. degree in 1983 from H.B.T.I., Kanpur and M.Tech. from University of Roorkee in 1986. He did his Ph.D. from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK and joined Electronics & Computer Engineering Dept., UOR in August 1998 as Assistant Professor. Before joining UOR, he worked in DCM, CMC Ltd., New Delhi, H.A.L. Kanpur and H.B.T.I. Kanpur. He has completed an AICTE funded project "A CORBA framework for distributed mobile applications", as a co-Investigator with Dr. R. C.
