Brief Life Sketch of Professor Ashok Kumar Gupta
Born in Saharanpur UP, Prof. Ashok Gupta obtained the Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with honours and M.E. in Civil Engineering with Specialization in Geotechnical Engineering both from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee). His Ph.D. is in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi.
During his final year of Master’s programme, he joined the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) Roorkee and worked at NIH for two years. Later, he joined as a regular faculty in Civil Engineering at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur, where he served for 23 years. During his tenure in NIT Hamirpur, he also held the office of Controller of Examination (CoE). Professor Ashok Kumar Gupta joined Jaypee University of Information Technology, Solan, HP in 2007. He served as Professor and Head of Department of Civil Engineering before moving to current designation. His teaching experience spans over 38 years.
He has received both the Best Teacher Award and the Best Faculty Mentor Award. He is the author of 135 journal papers, 5 edited books/conference proceedings, 15 book chapters, and more than 50 full conference papers and has guided 15 PhDs, more than 50 M.Tech. dissertations and more than 160 B.Tech. major projects in area of Civil Engineering. He was honored to be listed in the top two percent of scientists worldwide by Stanford, with over five hundred fifty citations per year during the last three consecutive years. He has more than 250 consultancy and research projects to his credit. He implemented DSC concept for rockfill materials modelling during his research work which is largely cited by other researchers. During recent time, his research areas of interest have been testing and modelling of geotechnical materials, finite element modelling and its applications to geotechnical engineering, environmental geotechnology focussing on Solid Waste Management (SWM) and slope stabilization using helical nails. He is Founder Chairman of Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) Shimla Chapter. He is also the founder Patron of Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) student chapter at JUIT. He is recipient of IGS-Shri R N Prasad Biennial Prize for the best paper on “Slope Stability and Land Slides twice (2019 & 2021)” and ASCE outstanding Reviewer award for Journal of Geomechanics for three consecutive years. He has five published patents from the government of India on soil nailing, landslide monitoring, and pavement indexing. He is the Co-Inventor at Geoliquefy.com, an AI-based software for mitigating soil liquefaction. He has chaired technical sessions at various conferences in India and abroad. He is Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (EJAAI).
