Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology (CSE&IT)

B.Tech., M.Tech. and Doctoral Programmes

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology offers  the following programmes:

  • 4-year B.Tech. programme, in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
  • 4-year B.Tech. programme, in Information Technology (IT).
  • 2-year M.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering.
  • 2-year M.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering (Information Security).
  • Ph. D programme in Computer Science and Engineering

 

Vision of the Department

To become a Center of Excellence in the computer sciences and information technology discipline with a strong research and teaching environment that adapts swiftly to the challenges of the 21st century.

 

Mission of the Department

M1.  To provide qualitative education and generate new knowledge by engaging in cutting-edge research  and by offering state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes,  leading to careers as Computer and IT professionals in the widely diversified domains of  industry, government and academia.

M2. To promote a teaching and learning process that yields advancements in state-of-the-art in computer science and information technology, resulting in  integration of research results and innovations into other scientific disciplines leading to  new technologies and products.

M3. To harness human capital for sustainable competitive edge and social relevance by inculcating the philosophy of continuous learning and innovation in Computer Science and IT.

 

 

B Tech CSE - Programme Educational Objectives(PEOs)
We focus on the following objectives to realize our vision and missions.
PEO-1: Engineering Ethos. To bring the physical, analytical and computational approaches of CSE to bear on the challenges they take on, abstracting essential structure, recognizing sources of uncertainty, and applying appropriate models, technical tools, and evaluations to develop their solutions. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates having  senior position in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-2: Leadership. To bring to their careers the self-assurance, integrity, and technical strengths that drive innovation, and the communication and collaboration skills to inspire and guide the groups they work with in bringing their ideas to fruition.  The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates to become Project Leads in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-3: Versatility. To develop  abilities  and  talents leading to creativity and productivity in fields and professions  beyond  the regular CSE curriculum.  The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates employed in careers outside CSE  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-4: Engagement. To   promote    life-long self learning  abilities to remain professionally effective to the society at large. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will enroll for MS/M Tech/Ph D programmes  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-5: Diversification. To  promote  among  student graduates the ability to gain multidisciplinary knowledge  through   projects and industrial training,  leading  to  a sustainable competitive edge in  R&D and  meeting societal  needs.  The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will work on computational projects for other disciplines  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-6: Projects. To inculcate group work and team management skills with cross-cultural etiquettes,   promoting knowledge  transfer  leading to conceptualization and  delivery of  projects with varied complexity.  The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will successfully complete and deliver/ deploy at least one successful project in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-7: Ethics and Attitudes. To sensitize students towards issues of social relevance, openness to other international cultures and  to introduce them to professional ethics and   practice. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will work as project teams in international cross cultural environment and be exposed to international professional ethics in 3 to 5 years time.

 

B Tech IT – Programme Educational Objectives(PEOs)
We focus on the following objectives to realize our vision.
PEO-1: Application of Knowledge. To provide student graduates with a solid foundation in mathematical, scientific and engineering   fundamentals  required to  develop problem solving ability. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates having  senior position in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-2: Teamwork. To prepare student graduates for a successful career with effective communication skills, teamwork skills  and work with values that meet the diversified needs of  industry, academia and research. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates employed in careers outside CSE  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-3: Design and Analysis. To train students in  comprehending, analyzing, designing and creating novel products and technologies  that   provide  solution frameworks to  real world problems. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will work on computational projects for other disciplines  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-4: Ethics and Social Relevance. To promote awareness among student graduates towards issues of  social relevance and   introduce them to professional ethics and   practice. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will work as project teams in international cross cultural environment and be exposed to international professional ethics in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-5: Interdisciplinary Project Management. To  inculcate in student graduates the ability to gain multidisciplinary knowledge  through   projects and industrial training, providing  a sustainable competitive edge in  R&D and  meeting industry needs. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will successfully complete and deliver/ deploy at least one successful project in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-6: Self Learning. To develop self-learning ability in graduates by inculcating the philosophy to continuously learn, innovate and contribute to creation of new knowledge for the benefit of  the society at large. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates will enroll for MS/M Tech/Ph D programmes  in 3 to 5 years time.
PEO-7: Innovation. To inculcate in  graduates the qualities of  leadership for technology innovation and  entrepreneurship. The Performance Indicator is to achieve at least: 5% of the graduates to become Project Leads in 3 to 5 years time.

 

Graduate Attributes/Program Outcomes(POs)
Attainment of Program Outcomes PO-1 through PO-12 as given below will be assessed by direct assessment through Course Outcomes (COs).
PO-1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and engg. specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO-2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze engineering problems to arrive at substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural, and engineering sciences.
PO-3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components, processes to meet the specifications with consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
PO-4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
PO-5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
PO-6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
PO-7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
PO-8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
PO-9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
PO-10. Communication: Communicate effectively with the engineering community and with society at large. Be able to comprehend and write effective reports documentation. Make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
PO-11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team. Manage projects in multidisciplinary environments.
PO-12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

 

 B Tech CSE- Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs):-
A  CSE graduate will achieve the following PSOs. PSO-1 will be assessed based on Advanced level courses done in seventh and eighth semesters. PSO2-4 will be assessed based on the performance in Project Components.
PSO-1:  Detailed Knowledge of contemporary issues in CSE.
PSO-2:  Strong skills in learning new programming environments.
PSO-3:  Ability to analyse, design, model, develop , test and manage complex software and information management systems. 
PSO-4:  Analysing the impact of Computer   Science and Engineering solutions in the societal and human context.

Exposure to Emerging and Futuristic Technologies

At the undergraduate level, the Department lays emphasis on theoretical and practical aspects of object-oriented programming, software engineering, Computer organization & architecture, database management, operating systems,  theory of computation, compiler design, computer graphics, computer networks and Microprocessors and microcontrollers. The department provides exposure to emerging technologies as well as futuristic technologies like nanotechnology, quantum computing, bioinformatics, genetic algorithms and parallel programming.

 

Research

The department pursues active research groups in several research frontiers of Computer Science & Engineering  like Ubiquitous Computing, Algorithms and Parallel Computing, Computational and Machine Intelligence, Computer Systems and Networks, Databases and Distributed Systems, Software Engineering and Information Systems and Systems and Network Security. Some of the active areas of research include Machine Translation, Image Processing, Machine Learning, Natural Language and Speech Processing, Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things, Pervasive Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing Algorithms, Mobile Computing, Wireless Sensor Networks, Software Defined Networking, Service Oriented Architecture and Software Agents, Cryptography and Network Security and Cyber Laws
