Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

B.Tech., M.Tech., Dual Degree, and Ph.D. Programmes

The Department offers 4 year B.Tech. programmes in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, a dual degree 5 year M.Tech. programme in Biotechnology, 2 year M.Tech. programmes in Biotechnology and Computational Biology, and Ph.D. in Biotechnology/Bioinformatics.

 

Courses Designed with an Engineering Base

The Department imparts education to equip students with modern skills compatible to the needs of industry and academia. Keeping in view the interdisciplinary nature of BT and BI, the curricula have been designed with an engineering base encompassing courses from computer science & engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics and professional development so as to enable students to work not only in the Biotech and Bioinformatics industries but also in other industries. The B. Tech. and M.Tech. students are provided an opportunity to do a research project which helps them to handle independent projects in academia and industry.

 

Research

The Department is actively involved in research by having the distinction of running externally funded R & D projects worth Rs. 100 million from various Govt. of India agencies such as the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science & Technology, DRDO, Ministry of Environment and Forest, ICMR, and industries. The department has a strong doctoral research program wherein 40 Ph.D. scholars are registered with faculty members. The Department has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for research in medicinal herbs by the DBT, Govt. of India.  Department has also been included from 2011 by DST, Govt. of India under the FIST program.

Major research areas on which department is focusing now are:

  • Plant Biotechnology - Gene Discovery, Pathway Elucidation, Genetic Engineering, Plant Cell Cultures
  • Food Technology - Functional Food Development, Nutraceuticals, Process Technologies
  • Industrial Biotechnology - Biofuels, Bioremediation, Industrial Enzymes
  • Natural Products – Lead molecules as Drugs, Synthetic Chemistry
  • Diseases – Infectious (Malaria, Diarrhea, MTB, HIV, etc.), Kidney stones, Cancers, Stem cells
  • Bioinformatics – Genome annotation, Sequence analysis, Rationale design of molecules & screening, Molecular Modeling, Chemoinformatics,  Prediction servers & Database development
  • Clinical Informatics – Translational, Imaging & high-end computing

 

More than 95% Placement

The placement of graduates has been more than 95% during the last 7 years with most of the students offered jobs in more than one industry. Our B.Tech. graduates are pursuing MS/Ph.D degrees in top class Universities across USA and Europe with scholarships.
